It is important for us to do as much as we can in camera. We see this as the only way to capture all those small details that real physics produce and which cannot be replicated in post. This approach allows us to realize all our creative ideas while staying authentic and convincing at the same time.
Behind the scenes.
The idea
From the very beginning, one of our initial ideas was to utilize white cubes. Our intention was to highlight the imperfect yet perfect beauty of flowers by contrasting them with the cold, precise form of white cubes. This led us to purchase several wooden cubes from a nearby art supply store, which we then meticulously painted with white acrylic to achieve a perfectly smooth, flat surface. This task was more challenging than we anticipated, but the result was quite satisfying. Interestingly, we didn’t use the cubes for a while after that, though they have since become a common element in our sketches. They often symbolize something cold and lifeless—but not in this case! :)
Making
Our goal is to minimize retouching as much as possible. One of our main techniques to achieve this is using threads to secure various objects. However, this method doesn't work with heavier items, such as wooden cubes. In those cases, we rely on more robust fixtures, which we later remove during post-production.
Materials.
Paper.
For paper-based prints, we use our favorite paper from the most renowned German manufacturer: Hanemühe Photo Rag. This robust paper features a pronounced texture while still reproducing even the finest details.
Frame.
We use only high-quality, German-made frames in a neutral wooden tone.
Aluminium.
Aluminium is our preferred material for its high-quality reproduction, attractive aesthetics, and practicality. Best of all, no frame is needed—everything for mounting is included, resulting in an elegant, minimalist solution.
